APPOINTING - STEPS TO TAKE

Once an RCP has accepted the offer of employment you will need to complete the necessary documentation and send it to us.

Due to the requirement for an RCP to have completed the necessary training before taking up their duties the appointment process is split into two stages.
Click here for a chart showing the appointment process.

Stage 1

You complete and send the necessary forms to us. The forms we need will vary depending on whether the RCP is already working at the school in another post, so see RCP documents required by SPS. Normally the documents required are as follows;

  • Form RCP1 - part 1
  • KCC Application Form - This must be signed by applicant and completed in full, including the sections "Your Health and "Criminal Offences"
  • Two references - both are satisfactory, but if there are any issues/concerns please include further details of discussions at interview
  • CRB disclosure - Either details of existing CRB check completed by KCC are provided or evidence that CRB is underway
  • Copies of either List A or List B immigration documents for eligibility to work in the UK - Main options are Passport (Front cover, endorsed pages and Photo ID page) Full Birth Certificate in combination with official document stating National Insurance Number.
(List A or B documents are detailed in Prevention of Illegal Working Guidance)
  • Pre employment Health Questionnaire
  • Bank details form - 301
  • P45 or 46

As we undertake the appointment of RCPs on behalf of KCC we must be satisfied that there is no reason not to appoint them. Only when we are satisfied will a warrant card be issued and sent to the employee.

Once the warrant card is received you will need to contact Road Safety to arrange the necessary training. The contact person is Linda Bell, Mobility & Safety Officer on 01622 221383 or e-mail Linda.Bell@kent.gov.uk.

Stage 2

Assuming your RCP has successfully completed the training, please complete and send form RCP1 - part 2 to us. In normal circumstances a RCP will begin their duties on the day after their training takes place and if that is the case their actual start date will be the same date that training took place, as they are entitled to be paid for their time spent training. If this is not the case you should contact us for advice on what date should be used. We will produce their contract of employment and pass the RCP's details to payroll for action.

Uniform

An RCP must wear a high visibility waterproof coat that complies with British Standards, together with a peaked cap, beret or yellow turban. The coat must be knee length and worn fastened and can be ordered from Commercial Services.

If you need any further information on the correct uniform to purchase please contact either Commercial Services or us. The cost associated with the purchase of new uniforms will be re-imbursed to your budget under the excepted items scheme.

Insurance Cover

All RCPs employed by KCC are covered under KCC's non school insurance. There is no longer a cut off point due to age as a result of the Age Discrimination legislation. However, if an RCP works beyond the age of 75 they will be covered by KCC Insurance but will only be entitled to reduced benefits.
